National Public Radio veteran and creator of Day to Day Alex Chadwick will present The “Radio Expeditions” Sound Spectacular on Wednesday, February 4 at 8 pm in UCSB Campbell Hall. As host of the award-winning “Radio Expeditions” series on Morning Edition, Chadwick has reported from deserts, from the deepest recesses of tropical jungles, while riding surging river rapids, from atop icy mountaintops, and from under the sea. “Radio Expeditions,” a co-production of NPR and the National Geographic Society, features stereo sound presentations that explore the natural world and diverse cultures with aural imagery that seeks to match the impeccable standards National Geographic has set with its photography. After ten years of field experience, Alex and the “Radio Expeditions” production team now offer a greatest hits presentation of some of the most extraordinary sounds heard anywhere, and mesmerizing stories with details of how they captured them. The “Radio Expeditions” sound experience transports audiences across the world to hear and feel what it’s like to be there—in the middle of an attack by tens of thousands of killer bees, for instance.
Alex Chadwick is the kind of journalist who is as comfortable in the studio as he is on a safari. For almost 30 years, Chadwick has been bringing the world to NPR listeners as an NPR News correspondent, producer and frequent guest host. Having a grasp of world events is hardly a stretch for someone who has reported from every continent on Earth except Antarctica.
Chadwick’s most recent role is host of NPR’s new program Day to Day, a weekday, one-hour newsmagazine produced by NPR in collaboration with Slate Magazine. The program, NPR’s first new newsmagazine since 1985, attempts to give hard news a human edge, full of fascinating first-person perspective and fresh angles that help listeners see the world differently.
Credited with authoring the NPR basic writing guide, Chadwick has also worked as a freelance writer and narrator for National Geographic Television, and a writer for ABC and CBS television. He wrote the 60 Minutes 25th Anniversary Special, the highest rated television program of 1993. A 1996 CBS project he wrote, In the Killing Fields of America, won an Emmy, a Peabody and the Robert F. Kennedy Award for reporting on the disadvantaged. Chadwick’s work at NPR has also won numerous awards, including the Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club and the 2002 Investigative Reporting Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
The acclaimed lecture series National Geographic Live! features some of the world’s most celebrated photographers, explorers, authors and scientists who explore the world while on assignment for National Geographic. Now in its second year in Santa Barbara, the four-event series will continue with National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Paul Sereno, who has discovered dinosaur fossils on several continents, presenting Africa’s Lost Dinosaur World on Thursday, March 4 and esteemed wildlife and adventure photographer Michael Nichols presenting Megatransect: A Photographic Journey Through the Heart of Africa on Monday, April 12.
This program is presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures in association with National Geographic Live!, a mission program of speakers and events that brings the National Geographic experience to communities nationwide. The evening is sponsored by KCLU Public Radio.
Tickets for The “Radio Expeditions” Sound Spectacular are $15 for the general public and $10 for UCSB students & youth 18 and under.
