Legendary scientist and author Jane Goodall is celebrated worldwide for her pioneering studies of chimpanzees in Gombe National Park, Tanzania for over 40 years. Currently a National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, she is one of the leading spokespeople for the preservation of wildlife habitats and the environment. In 2002 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Goodall to serve as a UN Messenger of Peace, while in 2001 she received the third Gandhi/King Award for Nonviolence.
