8 p.m. / UCSB Campbell Hall

“[They weave] together the sacred and the profane,
the poetic and the stylish, in perfect harmony.”

Le Monde

World-renowned Turkish multi-instrumentalist and singer Burhan Öçal and his rip-roaring ensemble play Gypsy roots music with jubilant virtuosity and unusual imagination. Öçal, a peerless finger drum musician, can be counted on for breathtaking tour-de-force solos. The Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, endowed with an abundant talent for improvisation, is dedicated to preserving the endangered musical heritage of the storied region between the Aegean and Black Seas.
